Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
